Recently, the inaugural Conference on Pet Food and Nutrition, managed by Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and organized by CAAS Feed Research Institute, convened in Beijing. This conference brought together experts and scholars from relevant research institutions, universities, enterprises, and industry associations from the United States, Canada, France, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and China. They conducted in-depth discussions on the frontiers of pet nutrition and food technology and key issues in industrial development, aiming to promote the future development of pet technology and the pet industry economy. During his thematic sharing, Dr. Xiao Min stated that the nutritional needs of pets must be based on their underlying logic—significant differences exist in the physiological characteristics and nutritional needs of dogs and cats at different growth stages and body types. Balanced nutrition for dogs and cats is not simply about "eating enough and well" but is a precise science based on life codes and spanning the entire life cycle. To precisely address the unique physiological needs of pets at different life stages and body types, solving the "burden" issue of energy, protein, and calcium elements in current nutritional supply, the core lies in precise supply and dynamic equilibrium. The future development of pet food needs to go beyond the extensive "high content" competition. Grounded in scientific evidence, it should involve adjusting macronutrients and micronutrients with milligram-level accuracy, while synergistically optimizing energy density, amino acid profiles, mineral ratios, and gut microbiota to move towards a "burden-free" new era. Only then can we truly unlock pets’ health potential and extend the span of their high-quality life.
