The core advantage of the Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association lies in its comprehensive coverage of Malaysia’s solar and renewable energy value chain. The association’s membership has grown from 45 members at its establishment to nearly 300 members, covering all segments of the solar ecosystem, including manufacturers, system integrators, consultants, financial institutions, scholars, and other stakeholders.

Chairman Ir. Justin Sim stated that the association carries a greater responsibility to unite the renewable energy ecosystem. “Our mission is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable energy solutions and advance Malaysia’s clean energy future—not only for the industry, but for the nation as a whole.”

The association actively engages with regulatory bodies such as the Energy Commission, providing industry recommendations on issues including the acceleration of solar transition action plans and standards for large-scale solar project tenders. In August 2026, Lionel Yap, Secretary-General of the Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association, hosted a dedicated workshop titled “Energy Storage Empowering Energy Transition” at the NCGS 2026 Asia Climate Summit, exploring the critical role of battery energy storage systems in enhancing grid stability, managing peak demand, and integrating renewable energy in Malaysia.

2. Leading Energy Transition from Policy Development to Implementation

The Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association is committed to promoting a stable and predictable regulatory environment to accelerate renewable energy deployment. In April 2026, the association called on the government to improve the efficiency of renewable energy implementation, particularly in the commercial and industrial solar sector. It pointed out that Malaysia already possesses policy ambitions, market interest, and supporting frameworks. The current challenge is no longer the direction of policy, but the speed of implementation. Without immediate improvements in execution efficiency, Malaysia may miss a critical opportunity to transform strong policies into economic, industrial, and energy security benefits.

The association also recommended strengthening support for applicants, optimizing existing mechanisms such as the Green Investment Tax Allowance (GITA) and the Solar Rakyat Incentive Scheme (SolaRIS), and ensuring that policy support is aligned with implementation efficiency.

The Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association holds a positive view of Malaysia’s electricity market reforms. Chairman Ir. Justin Sim stated that the continued improvement of the Corporate Renewable Energy Supply Scheme (CRESS) and System Access Charge (SAC) can enhance renewable energy integration, maintain investor confidence, and promote Malaysia as a renewable energy investment destination for sectors such as data centers and advanced manufacturing.

The association specifically highlighted that SAC’s differentiated structure for “firm supply” and “non-firm supply” represents a positive signal encouraging hybrid systems combining renewable energy and energy storage. This reflects policy guidance toward solutions that enhance grid stability.

3.Building Regional Cooperation Channels from Malaysia to ASEAN

At the regional cooperation level, the Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association continues to expand its influence. The association has established cooperation with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), providing members with platforms for communication and collaboration with government agencies and international investors.

A number of leading Chinese photovoltaic companies have deepened their presence in Malaysia by joining the association and participating in local projects. Malaysia’s solar supply chain remains highly dependent on China, with Chinese manufacturers maintaining advantages in production capacity, cost efficiency, and technological advancement. This deeply integrated industrial relationship provides a solid foundation for China-Malaysia cooperation in solar and energy storage.

At the 8th China International Solar and Energy Storage Industry Conference 2025, Chairman Ir. Justin Sim of the Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association stated that Malaysia is ready to emerge as a renewable energy hub in ASEAN. He emphasized Malaysia’s strategic advantages, growing industrial capabilities, and the urgent need to deepen regional cooperation to accelerate clean energy adoption across Southeast Asia.

From November 17 to 20, the 9th China International Solar and Energy Storage Industry Conference 2026 will be grandly held in Chengdu, China. As an authoritative representative of Malaysia’s solar and energy storage industry and an important participant in ASEAN’s renewable energy ecosystem, the Malaysia Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association will actively participate in the conference, deepen exchanges with Chinese solar and energy storage companies in technology, investment, and market development, and explore new opportunities for China-Malaysia cooperation in the renewable energy sector.
