Building Strong Partnerships, Advancing Toward a Sustainable Future Together

The partnership between Tongwei and ACWA Power was founded on a shared vision to accelerate the growth of global renewable energy. In 2024, the two companies formalized their commitment by signing a cooperation agreement at the SNEC PV Power Expo, laying the groundwork for future collaboration. In August 2024, Tongwei and ACWA Power further strengthened their alliance by signing a supply agreement for the 1.175 GW Al Muwayh project, which will be constructed by Larsen & Toubro.

Overcoming Technical Challenges in Extreme Environments

Located in the harsh desert conditions of western Saudi Arabia, the Al Muwayh project presents a unique set of challenges for PV systems, including extreme heat, intense UV radiation, high loads, sandstorms, and significant temperature fluctuations between day and night. UV radiation accelerates the degradation of module materials, while sandstorms and high winds impose additional load stress, potentially leading to hot spot formation. Furthermore, the substantial temperature fluctuations between day and night significantly exacerbate the thermal strain on system modules.

Tongwei TNC-G12R 66 double-glass modules have demonstrated exceptional technical performance. The modules have successfully passed standard and rigorous IEC tests, including triple-stringent LeTID, thermal cycling, and special load tests, proving their resilience against extreme temperature fluctuations and strong sandstorms under desert conditions.

UV Resistant, Dustproof, and Built to Last

The results of the UV radiation and dust tests further corroborate the exceptional performance of the Tongwei TNC-G12R 66 double-glass module. The modules successfully withstood rigorous IEC 63209 UV radiation and sandblasting tests, enduring wind speeds exceeding 30 m/s and sand concentrations of 0.38g/m² for a duration of 3 hours. During these tests, the modules exhibited no surface wear, hidden cracks on the cell panels, or any degradation in electrical contact or thermal performance.

These outstanding results not only validate the ability of Tongwei TNC-G12R 66 modules to endure Saudi Arabia's extreme climate but also represent a significant technological breakthrough for the global PV industry. As the Al Muwayh project advances steadily, the deepening collaboration between Tongwei and ACWA Power is poised to play an increasingly pivotal role in shaping the global renewable energy landscape.

With the predicted operation in 2027, the Al Muwayh project is expected to generate 1,629.7 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions and play a crucial role in advancing Saudi Arabia's goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions. This project also serves as a shining model for future PV projects in other desert regions around the world, providing valuable experience and a blueprint for overcoming similar environmental challenges.
